About Korentepoort Dam
The Korentepoort Dam, historically referred to as the Korente-Vetterivierdam, is an earth-fill and arch-type dam located 16 kilometres north-northwest of Riversdale at the base of the Langeberg Mountains in the Western Cape. Established in 1966 and managed by the Department of Water and Sanitation, the reservoir has a surface area of approximately 26.5 hectares and a storage capacity of 8.3 million cubic metres, serving as the primary domestic and agricultural water supply for the Riversdale region.
Beyond its water-security infrastructure, the site functions as a regulated nature reserve and holiday resort that accommodates public recreational activities, including largemouth bass fishing, waterskiing, canoeing, and camping. The surrounding terrain provides direct access to regional eco-tourism features, such as the Sleeping Beauty hiking trail and network trails through neighboring pine plantations.
