Grave of Able Seaman Just Nuisance
About Grave of Able Seaman Just Nuisance
The Grave of Able Seaman Just Nuisance is located at the former Klaver Camp on top of Red Hill in Simon's Town, South Africa. It is the final resting place of the only dog ever officially enlisted in the Royal Navy, a Great Dane who served during World War II. The Hike: Visitors typically reach the grave by climbing the Signal School Steps (also known as the Klawer Steps) from the town below. The climb consists of approximately 340 steep and uneven steps. Just Nuisance was buried with full military honours on 2 April 1944, his 7th birthday. His funeral included a firing party of Royal Marines and a bugler sounding the "Last Post," with his body draped in a Royal Naval White Ensign. He was originally enlisted to solve a legal issue regarding his habit of riding trains without a ticket; as a member of the armed forces, he was entitled to free travel.
