About Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden

The Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden is the oldest university botanical garden in South Africa, established in 1902. Located in the historical heart of Stellenbosch, it is a compact but highly diverse space featuring over 4,000 plant species from South Africa and around the globe. Bonsai Collection: One of the most famous features, including trees over 100 years old. It houses the Becky Lucas pine tree (dating to 1940), thought to be the oldest bonsai in Africa. Glasshouses: Four glasshouses showcase plants from different climates, including tropical and arid environments with rare orchids and succulents. Lily Ponds: Home to impressive Giant Water Lilies (Victoria amazonica) that are a major draw during the summer months. Botanical Art: The garden recently launched the James & Shirley Sherwood Botanical Art Collection, the first permanent scientific botanical art collection in South Africa.
