About Ospray
The HMS Osprey was a Royal Navy wooden screw gunvessel that was wrecked off the coast of Cape St. Francis on the morning of 30 May 1867. Returning to England from China, the ship struck a reef roughly 10 miles west of the Seal Point Lighthouse. Casualties: Of the 83 crew members on board, only one man, Stoker George Devreaux, lost his life while attempting to bring a hawser (thick rope) from the ship to the shore. Visible Remains: Today, parts of the wreck are still visible to the public. The most notable remnant is the ship's boiler, which lies on the beach approximately 3 km west of Cape St. Francis.
