About The Phyllisia

The Phyllisia was a 452-ton South African fishing trawler that ran aground on May 3, 1968. The vessel struck submerged rocks just south of Olifantsbos Point in the Cape Point Nature Reserve near Cape Town. Current Status: Today, only a small section of the stern remains visible above the water line. Over the decades, strong winds and currents have broken apart the rest of the ship. Dimensions: The vessel was approximately 145 feet long. Access Route: To view the Phyllisia, hikers can take the Phyllisia Circuit or the Kleinkommetjie route. Starting Point: The trail typically departs from the Gifkommetjie parking lot. Hike Details: It is roughly a 7km circular trail through coastal fynbos leading toward Hoek van Bobbejaan.
