The Nicobar, a Danish East Indiaman, was wrecked on 11 July 1783 in a storm off the coast of False Bay, South Africa. The ship was outbound from Copenhagen to Bengal and Tranquebar when it ran aground shortly after departing from a supply stop. Cargo: The ship was famously carrying a massive hoard of Swedish copper plate money (approximately 8 tons or over 5,000 plates). These large, heavy copper slabs were being transported to India to be melted down and minted into Danish colonial coinage. Approximate Coordinates: 34°46'51"S 19°38'14"E
