About Robben Island Museum

The Robben Island Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa. Once a maximum-security prison for political activists like Nelson Mandela, it now serves as a powerful symbol of the "triumph of the human spirit over adversity". Nelson Mandela's Cell: See the small, preserved cell where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. The Limestone Quarry: The site where prisoners were forced into hard labour; a small cave here served as a "university" where they discussed politics and education. Robert Sobukwe's House: The solitary confinement house of the Pan Africanist Congress leader. The Moturu Kramat: A sacred Muslim shrine built in 1969 to honour a prince of Madura exiled to the island in the 1700s.
