About Slave Lodge

The Iziko Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town and serves as a powerful museum dedicated to the history of slavery in South Africa. Once a site of confinement for thousands of enslaved people under the Dutch East India Company (VOC), it now operates under the theme "From Human Wrongs to Human Rights". The museum features a mix of somber historical narratives and diverse cultural collections: Slavery Heritage: Lower-level exhibits detailing the lives, resistance, and legacy of enslaved people at the Cape. "Making Freedom": A current exhibition exploring stories of courage and the fight for liberation. The Slave Calendar: A poignant display connecting modern South Africans with ancestors who were renamed after the month of their arrival. Ancient Collections: Upper galleries house impressive Egyptology, ceramics, and silverware collections.
