About Montagu Guano Cave
The Montagu Guano Cave Resort is an off-grid family resort and natural attraction situated at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains along Route 62 near Montagu, Western Cape. Its central feature is a massive natural cave that serves as a vital summer maternity roost for thousands of bats, including the Natal long-fingered bat and Temminck's hairy bat. The cave also holds significant archaeological value, preserving ancient Bushman rock art at its mouth and serving as a prehistoric tool-making site where thousands of early stone tools were excavated in the 1960s.
Visitors can reach the cave entry by foot or via scheduled, scenic tractor rides up the mountain. Beyond the cave itself, the property functions as a recreational resort featuring heated indoor rock pools, outdoor swimming pools, and water slides. It also hosts an animal touch farm with camels, alpacas, and miniature ponies, alongside a dedicated rabbit exhibit and a collection of international fowl. For accommodation, the resort provides grass-and-soil campsites with electrical hookups, self-catering tent houses, and private cottages with wood-fired hot tubs. An on-site restaurant, De Mooie Uitzicht, provides dining options, while horse rides, hiking trails, and catch-and-release fishing round out the activities.
