Andries Pretorius Monument

Graaff Reinet, Eastern CapeThe Voortrekker monument, erected in 1943 about 3 km from Graaff-Reinet at the Camdeboo National Park Offices, was sculpted by Coert Steynberg and unveiled by Mrs Gustav Preller on Andries Pretorius’s birthday, 27 November. Dominated by Pretorius’s imposing figure gazing northward with his hand on a wagon wheel, the design also features Afrikaner oxen in tribute to the animals that hauled the trekkers’ wagons. The inscription recalls Pretorius’s words to Sir Harry Smith in 1848: “One day a wheel will indeed roll across our world and neither you nor I will be able to stop it.”View details →

Gideon Scheepers Memorial

Graaff Reinet, Eastern CapeDuring the Anglo-Boer War, Gideon Scheepers led his own commando in the Cape Midlands before being captured, tried in Graaff-Reinet for alleged war crimes, and executed by firing squad. To honor him, the Graaff-Reinet Afrikaans Cultural Society erected a memorial about 2 km from town on the Murraysburg road, near the site of his death. The monument features three local rocks supporting a stainless steel needle, symbolizing hope and faith in God: the largest rock represents the resilience of the young Afrikaner nation, while two tilted boulders signify a people suppressed but not defeated, with a fourth stone bearing the inscription.View details →
