About Die Rooibrug

The Rooi Bruggie (Red Bridge) is an iconic historical pedestrian bridge located in Willowmore in the Eastern Cape. It is one of the town's most famous landmarks and serves as a reminder of early 20th-century infrastructure in the Karoo. Origin: The bridge was erected around 1903 on the instruction of the Cape Government. Builder: It was manufactured in England by The Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company. Purpose: It was built specifically as a pedestrian bridge over the Noodsloot River to allow residents to cross safely when the river was in flood. At the time, the road was merely a drift (ford), making it difficult for people to cross on foot without getting wet or facing danger.
